MURPHY (May 17, 2013) Just as the majority of residents in Murphy are becoming accustomed to a new trash and recycling pickup schedule, a one-day change to accommodate Memorial Day will shift pickup days, according to Customer Service Manager Candy McQuiston.

“On the week of Memorial Day, which always falls on a Monday, trash and recycling will shift over one day for all routes. There will be no service on Monday, May 27, but every zone will be serviced nonetheless,” she said.

Progressive Waste Solutions is the City’s trash and recycling collection contractor, having acquired the contract a month ago.

“Our contract with Progressive, which collects on a five-day-a-week schedule, contains a provision that moves collection one day from the day the holiday occurs. For example, since Memorial Day is a Monday, all collection days that week move over one day, including Friday’s collection moving to Saturday. On the other hand, since Independence Day this year falls on a Thursday, the only trash and collection days affected that week will be Thursday and Friday, each shifting over one day,” she explained.

While there is no normal Saturday pickup, the contractor collects on Saturdays during holiday weeks.

The six holidays during which Progressive implements the shift include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

“In each of these cases, normal routes will be resumed on the Monday after the holiday week,” said McQuiston.
