Grayson County, Texas -- Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. Grayson County Historical Society will be having an exciting black and white photo presentation given by our Sherman Librarian friend, Melissa Eason.

We will reminisce over Sherman history while looking at old photos. Photos will include some of the schools, the railroad, industries, and the interesting characters that have shaped our community.  I'm sure as we look at the old photos it will bring many memories for the ones that were born here and the ones that came to this area in later life.  Some of these businesses are still here and many are gone, even the buildings.

For the ones that do not know our librarian, Melissa Eason, here are some known facts about the lady.  Her first job at 15 was working at Six Flags Over Texas.   With her knowledge and enthusiasm, she was later promoted to Supervisor of the gift shop.

Melissa has served as the Administrator of the Sherman Public Library since 2017. She began working at the library in 2005, where she worked in various roles, beginning as a clerk in Genealogy, Secretary, and Assistant Administrator. She attended University of North Texas for both her bachelor's and master's degrees. Though she lived in the Metroplex for a few years, the majority of her life has been spent in Sherman.

Melissa serves as President of the Bibliographic Association of the Red River (BARR) and Secretary of Public Library Administrators of North Texas (PLANT). She also serves on the Family Self Sufficiency Board, as President-Elect for the Sherman Community Players, and is an active member of the Sherman Art League.

The Sherman Library was newly remodeled after a fire in 2017 with everything new and improved, so much more efficient. Any guest is entitled to use the new computers,  printers with a high degree of privacy.  I also learned Melissa is the youth librarian. This lady  has many talents and speaks Spanish.  There are puppets to perform and also there has been a violin class for children ages 6-8 to learn to play the violin.

When not filling her busy schedule, Melissa enjoys spending time with friends and family.  She loves the Grayson County community and enjoys attending local events, especially those related to music, visual art, and theater. She loves learning new things, so she is often attending workshops, reading, and listening to podcasts. Melissa has 3 adult children, one recently married. The 2 youngest live at home with her and her dogs, Artie and Coco.

Here is a  piece of interesting history I found in black and white.. The first courthouse was constructed in 1847 and torn down in 1858.  This old photograph had this statement attached;

"I, J.P. Loving, do hereby certify that the above photograph is a true picture of the first courthouse built in the present town of Sherman, Texas, and that it was customary for juries trying cases in said court house to retire to the shade of the old Pecan tree, then standing on the public square to consider their verdict" signed Jesse P. Loving."
