Denison, Texas -- Denison's Homecoming Parade & Mural Dedication coming up 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 will feature hometown hero, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger.

It will be a busy morning for the Denison native. At 11:30 a.m., Sullenberger is scheduled to be at Perrin AFB Museum for an exhibit dedication and book-signing.

The former fighter pilot, experienced glider pilot and aviation safety expert garnered international acclaim when he managed to pilot US Airways Flight 1549 to an unpowered ditching in the Hudson River after the Airbus A320 struck a flock of birds and lost all engine power on climbout from New York City's LaGuardia Airport. Known forever in aviation annals as the "Miracle on the Hudson," all 150 passengers and crew of three survived.

Tom Hanks would eventually star as Sullenberger in the 2016 film, Sully.

Sullenberger, now 72 and retired after a career as a commercial pilot that spanned three decades, was also the honored guest in 2009 at the D-Day celebration of heroes and veterans at the Katy Depot in Denison.
