Sherman, Texas -- Linda Buckingham, 84, of Sherman, Texas passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on October 23, 2024. Linda loved the Lord and her husband, children and family.
Linda was born December 26, 1939, in Sherman, Texas to Mozelle and Sam Houston Hilburn. Her family later moved to Gainesville, Texas where she graduated
from high school. During this time, she represented Gainesville in Miss USA Pageant.
She then graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Education. Linda was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She was proud of her accomplishment of graduating from high school in 3 years and from college in 3 years.
Linda married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Glenn Buckingham on August 7, 1960, in Gainesville, Texas. They were married 64 wonderful years, together having 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. After they married, they moved to Galveston where her husband, Glenn, attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School. Linda taught 4th and 5th grade in Texas City, Galveston and Ft. Worth, Texas. After medical school, they moved to Landstuhl, Germany where they lived 3 years while he was in the Army serving as a military surgeon.
Linda was very active in both her church and in community affairs, serving on the board of the American Heart Association, also served with the Red Cross. She enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader and was in the Sherman Service League. One of her most joyous
times was owning and managing Papillon and the Veranda, two women’s boutiques.
In her church, she and her husband sponsored a singles group, multiple Bible studies, along with helping with many other church functions. Linda loved opening up her home to family and friends and was a gracious host and wonderful cook. She enjoyed traveling to New York as a buyer for her stores, playing golf, snow skiing, riding
motorcycles, biking and being with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jack Hilburn.
Linda is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Glenn Buckingham of Sherman, daughters Elizabeth Buckingham Byler and husband Dr. Richard Byler, Kimberly Buckingham Taylor and husband Scott Taylor, son Steve Buckingham and seven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Other survivors include her brother David Hilburn and Joey Gooch and sister Harriet Hilburn.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Post Oak Fellowship, 2100 N Woods St, Sherman, TX. Rev. Randy Shoulders will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers are Diane Harrell, Janet Fletcher, Karen Brennan and Ann May.
