Old copies of the Bonhi Weekly dating back to 1918 are brittle and yellowed with age now, but fortunately they were safely stored away by a wise librarian, Glenda Meador, who appreciated the history those crumbling pages represent. Back in 1928, the University of Texas gave its 1,200 incoming freshmen an English exam designed to divide the class into sections based on aptitude. Of the 1,200 first-year students, only 27 received a grade of 90 or above. No one should be surprised to know that Austin High ranked first in Texas with five graduates deserving of an “A.” But would you believe Bonham High School tied Dallas High for second place?

On November 28, 1839, upon motion by Daniel Rowlett, the Republic of Texas expanded the western boundary to include land that later became Grayson, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Montague, Wise, Clay, Jack, Wichita, Archer, Young, Wilbarger, Baylor, Throckmorton, Hardeman, Foard, Knox, Haskell, Stonewall, King, Cottle, and Childress counties, as well as parts of Hunt and Collingsworth counties.

During the annual Bonham Heritage Day Festival, residents paid homage to the original inhabitants of this region -- the Caddo Nation -- and to the intrepid French trappers who ventured up from New Orleans in the 1700s in search of pelts.

The public is invited to the planting of a "special" bois d'arc tree on the grounds of the historic Fannin County Courthouse at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025, during Bonham Heritage Day. The tree was picked out and donated by Texoma’s very own and well-known bois d'arc tree expert, John Baecht, who will have a bois d’arc woodworking station set up on the grounds of the courthouse and will be doing demonstrations the remainder of the day for Heritage Day. What better way to celebrate Bonham / Fannin County’s relationship with bois d’arc than on Bonham Heritage Day.

Water is flowing through five new streams in North Texas this spring, bringing life back to areas impacted for decades by severe erosion and habitat loss. Upper Trinity Regional Water District (UTRWD) restored the streams as part of environmental mitigation for future Lake Ralph Hall, Texas’s newest major lake under construction near Ladonia.

In conjunction with Heritage Day and the Vive le Bois d’Arc celebration on May 3, the Fannin County Museum of History is delighted to have a display of prehistoric and Caddo artifacts in the display case on the 2nd floor of the Fannin County Courthouse.

I was curious about the relationship between Harry S Truman and Sam Rayburn because of a piece of corn. Currently at the Sam Rayburn Museum there is corn on the cob encased in resin on display in the "Gifts of a Nation" display case. No one is completely certain why Rayburn had it, but Truman has the same one. This is what led me to look into the friendship between Rayburn and Truman. Bonham resident Kay Sisk has collected postcards of Bonham for many years, finding them at trade shows and estate sales. Some of the postcards were given away free by local businesses, and some were sold. The Fannin County Museum of History asked Kay to display some of her postcards in the display case on the 2nd floor of the courthouse.

Then they heard bulldozers clearing trees.

"Japanese War Brides: Across a Wide Divide" begins a national tour December 14 at Irving Archives and Museum in Irving, Texas. These young women left their homes to build lives within the complexities of postwar American society. Their experiences reshaped communities by challenging immigration laws and race relations. The arrival of these brides marked the largest women-only immigration event in U.S. history and, by 1960, had increased the population of Asian Americans in the U.S. by 10%.

Historic Fannin County newspapers often featured beautiful front pages for their Christmas editions. An exhibit of these newspapers is now on display on the 2nd Floor of the Fannin County Courthouse. Visit the courthouse during this season to view this display and beautiful decorations.

Upper Trinity's contractors are finishing up construction on five new streams near future Lake Ralph Hall, which will flow into the North Sulphur River. The newly connected tributary streams are naturally beginning to flow with rainwater this fall, bringing life back to areas impacted for decades by severe erosion and loss of habitat. Restoring the tributaries of the river to their natural, curved paths helps mitigate the area's severe erosion and provide previously lost habitat.

Cool off this summer with a splash of fun at the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site's annual Water Balloon Fest! The event is free and open to the public, and Tropical Sno will be on-site offering refreshing snow cones for purchase.

At 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, the members of the Fannin County Amateur Radio Club started their "Skywarn Net" in anticipation of this potentially devastating storm. When the storm hit Fannin County around 9:00 p.m., radio operators began reporting wind speeds, rainfall levels and other critical information which was used by emergency management personnel. One area in the northeastern section of the county clocked 110 mph winds with horizontal rainfall at 2 inches per hour. The portion of the storm that hit Fannin County produced two confirmed F1 tornadoes, both of which were reported by our K5FRC members while they were conducting a "Skywarn Net" and communicating directly with local emergency management and the NWS (National Weather Service).

Fannin County Clerk Jenny Garner announced that the county has hired an elections administrator, Cris Perez Garcia (pictured). Most recently from Salem, Oregon, Garcia is eager to be coming back to Texas. "She has worked as an elections official," Garner began, "she has worked in HR, and before that she was a legal assistant, has a degree in English, and is bi-lingual on top of it all. So, I don't think we could have asked for very much more that what we have managed to find." Garcia was a unanimous selection by an election commission.

1913 – Confederate veterans at the Great Reunion of 1913 reenact Pickett's Charge; upon reaching the high-water mark of the Confederacy they are met by the outstretched hands of friendship from Union survivors. Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault on July 3, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg. It was ordered by Confederate General Robert E. Lee as part of his plan to break through Union lines and achieve a decisive victory in the North. The charge was named after Major General George Pickett, one of the Confederate Army's division commanders. The assault was aimed at the center of the Union Army's position on Cemetery Ridge, which was believed to be a vulnerable point in the Union defenses. As the Confederate troops marched across nearly a mile of open ground, they came under heavy artillery and rifle fire from entrenched Union forces. The open terrain offered little cover, making the Confederate soldiers easy targets, and their ranks were quickly decimated. Although a small number of the Confederate soldiers managed to reach the Union lines and engage in hand-to-hand combat, they were ultimately overwhelmed. The charge ended in a disastrous defeat for the Confederates, with more than half of the men involved either killed, wounded, or captured. Pickett's Charge marked the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, and its furthest advance is called the "high-water mark of the Confederacy." The 1913 Gettysburg reunion was a Gettysburg Battlefield encampment of American Civil War veterans for the Battle of Gettysburg's 50th anniversary. The June 29 – July 4 gathering of 53,407 veterans (about 8,750 Confederate) was the largest Civil War veteran reunion. All honorably-discharged veterans in the Grand Army of the Republic and the United Confederate Veterans were invited, and veterans from 46 of the 48 states attended (all except Nevada and Wyoming). Despite official concerns "that there might be unpleasant differences, at least, between the blue and gray" (as after England's War of the Roses and the French Revolution), the peaceful reunion was characterized by instances of Union–Confederate camaraderie. President Woodrow Wilson's July 4 reunion address summarized the spirit: "We have found one another again as brothers and comrades in arms, enemies no longer, generous friends rather, our battles long past, the quarrel forgotten—except that we shall not forget the splendid valor." Years later, when asked why the charge at Gettysburg failed, Pickett reportedly said, "I've always thought the Yankees had something to do with it."

The public water system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of 6/30/2025.

Texans will soon experience a more streamlined process for receiving metal license plates when they purchase a car from a dealer, thanks to a new state law. Under House Bill 718, passed by the 88th Legislature in 2023, starting July 1, 2025, motor vehicle dealers will begin issuing metal license plates directly to buyers of new and used vehicles.

The event is ARRL Field Day (www.arrl.org/field-day), an annual amateur radio activity organized since 1933 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States.

Hundreds of Bonham High School alumni are back in town for the 2025 Bonham All School Reunion and Friday night, instead of joining an endless line of cars circling the courthouse and heading down the drag, friends brought lawn chairs and coolers packed with refreshments and visited on the courthouse square while a DJ cranked out the jams.

The Bonham All School Reunion is slated to kick off Friday, June 27 through Sunday, June 29, 2025. This is the first one since 2015 as 2020 was not held due to COVID. According to the Bonhi All School Reunion board, over 600-700 former students and graduates are expected for the festivities. Everyone who attended Bonham High School is invited to join in the weekend events that bring many graduates and former students to Bonham.

Ryan Henderson, who has led the City of Anna with steadfast dedication and humility, will leave the organization as City Manager, effective Oct. 24, 2025.

Due to power outage and reduced system pressure, the Texas Commission on Environmental equality has required the Gober MUD, 0740024, public water system to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc).

A meeting was held this week regarding a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that is eyeing property north of Bonham on Rec. Road 3, near the city's water supply, Lake Bonham. The property abuts the 5,000-foot buffer zone that encompasses Bois d'Arc Lake. This proposed project is expected to be before Fannin County Commissioners Court in July or August. The Bess near Savoy is 99% complete and a third BESS has been considering a location south of Bonham on County Road 4200.

The McKinney City Council approved a resolution on June 17 to accept a $7,000,000 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), paving the way for important safety upgrades for Taxiway A at McKinney National Airport (TKI).

The City of Bonham has planned for green debris to be picked up curbside the week of June 23, 2025. This gives residents the opportunity to collect trees, limbs and vegetative debris and place them near the edge of their property. It must not be near any utility service (gas meters, water meters, utility poles) mailboxes, and should not be in the street or roadway.

A 20-year political vendetta apparently spearheaded by Lauri Blake, a former district judge who was recently admonished by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, and Richard Glaser, a former DA in Fannin County, may finally be over now that Dallas DA John Creuzot has filed a motion to dismiss the final four criminal indictments in the Fannin County Courthouse restoration case due to insufficient evidence.

This is official notice that there will be a Public Hearing at 5:00 pm, Monday, June 16, 2025, in the Community Room of the Sherman Police Department, 2600 W. Travis St., Sherman, Texas, for the following items.

On June 16, at 8:00 p.m. the westbound SH-91 traffic will be detoured onto the new pavement and will be able to continue on the southbound frontage road or access the entrance ramp to southbound US 75.

Emerging near the Missouri border in north central Arkansas, the Spring River has been described as the state's most dependable natural stream.

Cotter Trout Dock (870-435-6525) said, "Trout catching has been phenomenal. The quality of our catch has improved with the higher releases of water at the dam."

Fishing this week has been good. Striper continue to be good on live bait. Definitely a lot better than it has been. Catfish are biting on hotdogs and live shad. Crappie are okay near brush piles in open water or coves on minnows or jigs with power bait.

Bois d'Arc Lake: GOOD. water normal stain; 83 degrees; 0.47 feet above pool. Bass morning bite is good around points or pond weed with topwaters. Offshore bite is better mid morning to evening on brush piles, long points with deep bushes and pond dams in 15-27 feet with Carolina rigs, Texas rigs and deep crankbaits.

The Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce will host its 2025 Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (CDT) at the beautiful Indian Creek Golf Club.

Don and Carol Dodson of Columbia, South Carolina, have established a $1,000,000 scholarship program for graduates of Bonham High School. The scholarships will be used for academic study at the undergraduate level at Texas public universities and selected private colleges and universities. This summer, children ages 8-12 are invited to join the Sam Rayburn House for an exploration of hobbies that the Rayburn family enjoyed as well as hobbies featuring life-skills that can lead to possible careers and the desire to volunteer. Children will learn how people spent their time without the technology of today through hands-on lessons and listening to guest presenters. The Sam Rayburn House will provide all supplies. Special presenters including the Fannin County Master Gardeners and Bonham State Park will speak on certain program days. The deadline to register for this program is June 13.

The week-long camp offers Girl Scouts in grades 8 through 12 an immersive glimpse into college life. Registration deadline was May 19.
