Residents may see smoke in the Erwin Park area during the burn and do not need to call emergency services to report it.

McKinney, Texas -- The City of McKinney Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the McKinney Fire Department, will conduct a prescribed burn across nearly 80 acres in Erwin Park on Thursday, Feb. 6. Erwin Park will be fully closed on the day of the burn.

Depending on weather conditions, the date of the burn may change. A similar controlled burn will be held at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary on Thursday, Feb. 13

“Conducting a prescribed burn is a critical step in maintaining the park’s health and vitality. By removing dead undergrowth, we’re creating an environment where new growth can flourish so the park remains a thriving natural space for our residents to enjoy,” said Amy Kinkade, Director of Parks and Recreation.

Crews on site will closely monitor the prescribed burn to ensure the burn is as safe as possible. Smoke may be visible in or around Erwin Park during the burn, and several fire apparatuses will be in the vicinity, but there is no need to call emergency services to report it.

“This prescribed burn helps reduce the risk of future wildfires by eliminating dry brush and other natural fuels while also enhancing the park’s ecosystem. It also provides invaluable live-fire training for our firefighters, better preparing them for wildland firefighting,” said Fire Chief Paul Dow.

This controlled burn is being coordinated after consultation with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. For more information, visit McKinneyParks.org/Erwin.
