Voter-approved Crime Control District
supports public safety efforts
MPD officers will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including vehicle weight limits, mechanical safety requirements, and driver service hour regulations. These measures are designed to prevent road damage and reduce the risk of accidents caused by improperly maintained or overloaded commercial vehicles.
“Commercial vehicles that exceed weight limits or operate with unsafe equipment pose a significant risk to public safety,” said Police Chief, Erik Stokes. “With the establishment of the Crime Control and Prevention District, we now have additional resources to step up enforcement efforts and ensure our roads remain safe for all drivers.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees commercial vehicle enforcement statewide, with a mission to reduce accidents, protect infrastructure, and regulate motor carrier safety compliance. In partnership with DPS guidelines, MPD will increase routine inspections of semi-trucks, rock haulers, and other commercial transport vehicles to verify compliance with safety and registration laws.
In addition to inspections, officers will monitor driver service hour regulations to prevent fatigue-related accidents, a growing concern in commercial trucking. Overworked and drowsy drivers present a hazard on the roads, and enforcement efforts aim to mitigate these risks through proactive intervention.
The CCPD, approved by Melissa voters, enables MPD to expand its enforcement capabilities and implement targeted safety initiatives like this one. The district provides dedicated funding to enhance policing efforts, purchase necessary equipment, and support crime prevention strategies that protect the Melissa community.
“Our residents’ support of the Crime Control and Prevention District underscores a shared commitment to safety,” said Chief Stokes. “This initiative directly reflects that commitment, allowing us to take proactive steps to protect our roads and our community.”
