Anna, Texas -- The City of Anna has officially activated the Hurricane Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, marking a major milestone in regional infrastructure that will provide long-term cost savings and environmental benefits for Anna and surrounding communities.
Designed to support the rapid growth of Anna, Van Alstyne, Weston, and Collin County’s unincorporated areas, the state-of-the-art plant will operate in multiple phases, eventually reaching a total treatment capacity of 16 million gallons per day (MGD). The first phase, now active, provides 2 MGD of capacity, replacing the temporary package plant that handled 0.4 MGD. That is enough water to support thousands of additional homes, ensuring sustainable growth for our community. Put simply, this first phase is the equivalent to filling 32,000 bathtubs every single day.
The Hurricane Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant gives Anna greater control over long-term sewer rates, a critical advantage as regional costs continue to rise. Rates from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) have historically increased 10-15% annually, making local ownership of wastewater treatment a significant cost-saving measure.
Additionally, this regional facility reduces the financial burden on Anna’s neighbors by allowing other participating communities to pay wholesale rates to Anna for wastewater treatment services. This strategic approach enables cost-sharing and ensures that infrastructure investments benefit multiple jurisdictions.
The plant’s activation also eliminates the need for miles of large-diameter sewer mains running through neighboring cities such as Melissa and McKinney, streamlining infrastructure development and reducing future maintenance costs.
Designed with a membrane bioreactor treatment process, the plant produces treated effluent that exceeds Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requirements, minimizing environmental impact on local ecosystems and maintaining high water quality standards.
“This project represents a smart, regional approach to infrastructure planning,” said Greg Peters, P.E., Assistant City Manager. “Not only does it allow us to stabilize wastewater rates for Anna neighbors, but it also ensures our wastewater treatment capacity grows with our community while maintaining strong environmental stewardship.”
