Paris, Texas -- Our speaker for the April meeting of the Lamar County Genealogical Society will be Donna Moore.

She will bring a program, with the use of a projector and screen, on Myths and Truths in Research and a little bit about her historic Paris home.

Donna Moore was born and raised in Texas. Her parents were originally from Pennsylvania, but her father served in the Air Force and that brought them to Carswell AFB in Fort Worth.

Donna had a 30-year career in finance with some notable companies, such as Boeing and Vought/Triumph Aerostructures, within the aerospace industry.  While employed she earned three master's degrees with the latest a Master's in Librarian Science from UNT, completed in 2020. She worked for the Bedford Public Library for 2 years, finally retiring in 2022 and moved to Paris in Oct. 2022 to live in her historic home built in 1916 and finish the restoration.

Truths & Myths; The DAR Museum:

The DAR Museum had an exhibit in 2006 on the myths or truths that are told about our home life in early American history. The program examines the history of several artifacts, such as petticoat tables, grandfather clocks, coin silver, coral as an amulet against evil, asking questions about the history being told about them. Is it more likely a myth given the evidence or is it true? The museum staff investigates the stories associated with their artifacts, as well as some interesting sayings such as "good night, sleep tight," "mad as a hatter," or the story of "how colonial women had such small waists." They have often found that history and the evidence tells a different story....it's a great program and hopefully we'll all learn the truths behind some of these early myths.

About her home place here in Paris that she will talk about:

Donna bought her house approximately 20 years ago, after it was found by her mom in her own search for some country property.

"Back then I could only come up on weekends with my son to enjoy it and just do basic maintenance, yardwork, etc.," says Donna.  "So I never really lived in it until late 2022 after I retired."

It was built in 1916, and the Leander Bankhead family owned it. Mr. Bankhead had a daughter, Nell, and she and her husband, Dr. Owen R. O'Neill lived in the house until they both passed away. They had no children. They all now reside in Evergreen Cemetery. Donna will tell us more.

She has two awesome sons, one that lives in CA and her youngest living in Waco, but no grandkids yet. Living with her are four English mastiffs, her guardians and best friends!

She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 2015 and has been extremely active in serving the society at the chapter, state and national levels. Currently she is serving as the State Chair for the Museum Outreach Committee. Her lineage shows 9 proven patriots who served in the war, with their roots in PA primarily from German descent.
