McKinney, Texas (May 6, 2025) – Commercial passenger service in McKinney is one step closer to becoming a reality following the City Council’s approval of a construction agreement today that launches the next phase of eastside development at McKinney National Airport.

The City Council authorized the City Manager to execute an agreement with Swinerton for Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) services, clearing the way for construction to begin on eastside infrastructure, including the new commercial terminal building, aircraft parking areas, taxiway connector, and utilities. CMAR is a project delivery method that allows the city to lock in construction costs early while collaborating closely with the builder throughout the design process. This approach reduces financial risk and helps ensure the project stays on time and within budget, ultimately minimizing the financial burden on McKinney taxpayers.

“We are cleared for takeoff,” said Mayor George Fuller. “This project has been years in the making, and now, with this milestone, McKinney is positioned to deliver the convenience of commercial air service to our community and region. We’re building more than a terminal, we’re building opportunity for the future.”

The terminal project is a cornerstone of the Council’s long-term vision to maximize the development of McKinney National Airport. This development follows recent momentum from the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and McKinney Community Development Corporation, which approved funding to support infrastructure needs for the terminal project.

According to a 2024 economic impact report, McKinney National Airport currently generates over $299 million annually for McKinney and the surrounding region. With continued investment, including a new passenger terminal, the airport’s impact is expected to grow to another $400 million annually, reinforcing and supporting local careers, tourism, and long-term development.

Construction is expected to begin in June 2025, with commercial flights anticipated to take off in late 2026. For more information about McKinney National Airport and McKinney Air Center, please visit McKinneyTexas.org/FlyTKI.
