Once inside, the man was greeted by a staff member and acknowledged them with a wave. The suspect walked toward the employee, pulling down the facial covering when he spoke with them. He asked to visit with the German Shepherd puppy; and on his own, entered the playroom closest to the front door as the employee was getting the puppy.
The man began acting as if he was filling out a credit application, and within five minutes, he picked up the puppy and rushed to the door. The employee was stationed near the front of the store and is seen in a surveillance video asking for the puppy. The suspect refused and began running once outside the store. The employee chased him for a short time but lost the suspect as he ran toward a nearby housing development. As with all Petland puppies, the black and tan German Shepherd is microchipped and has been reported stolen.
A passerby later took a photo of the suspect with the puppy in his arms while he was spotted waiting to cross a street in the shopping area. The photo shows the man’s full face and the size of the puppy. The suspect appears to be Black, tall and thin and wearing glasses. In addition to the head and face covering, he entered the store wearing a green baseball cap, dark pants and dark t-shirt with the character Betty Boop on the front.
Petland McKinney requests the community to look at this man, and if you recognize him or know the whereabouts of the German Shepherd puppy to contact the McKinney Police Department immediately at (972) 547-2700. Please ask for Officer D. Safford.
