Funding to build commercial passenger service
support projects at TKI
McKinney, Texas (June 26, 2025) – Governor Greg Abbott on June 21 signed the two-year state budget, which will fund $14,800,000 for eastside airfield projects at McKinney National Airport (TKI). Included in the approved budget is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant that delivers important funding to construct projects supporting commercial passenger service at TKI.
The City of McKinney plans to break ground this summer on a new passenger terminal on the airport’s eastside in response to airlines that have expressed interest in providing service from McKinney National Airport since 2019.
“Commercial airline service at McKinney National Airport is soon becoming a reality,” said Mayor Bill Cox. “This $14.8 million grant brings us closer to completing the funding for our new passenger terminal and support facilities, which will be a modern gateway for local and visiting travelers.”
"Senator Angela Paxton and Representative Jeff Leach and their staff were instrumental in getting funding for McKinney National Airport included in the state budget. We are deeply appreciative of their efforts to champion funding to bring convenient and affordable air travel to the North Texas region,” Cox continued.
“This substantial $14.8 million investment in the McKinney National Airport creates legacy-driven opportunities for the growing economic and domestic needs of the City of McKinney and the entire North Texas region,” said Senator Angela Paxton. “I’m truly blessed to represent the people of McKinney and thankful I could help secure this funding for generations to come.”
“We delivered real results for the City of McKinney this session,” said Representative Jeff Leach. “The $14.8 million investment in McKinney National Airport will advance critical infrastructure projects that support economic growth, attract new businesses, and enhance the quality of life for our residents. I was honored to play a role in securing this funding and proud to stand with our community in North Texas as we build an exciting future together.”
Groundbreaking for McKinney National Airport’s passenger terminal is expected in July 2025, with commercial flights anticipated to take off in late 2026.
McKinney National Airport is one of six airports in Texas to receive a portion of the $106,800,000 approved in the two-year state budget. The money can be invested in passenger facilities and airfield infrastructure projects to enhance safety, security, and efficiency for airport users.
