The Leonard Picnic traces its roots to July 22, 1880, when settlers gathered for a community meal during a town lot sale—likely fueled by whatever could be hunted, gathered, or shared. One year later, with only 50 residents, the town celebrated its first birthday—and a tradition was born. The picnic has been held every summer since—except in 1918 and 1945, when World Wars I and II cast their shadow across the globe.
Leonard’s growth followed steadily. By 1885, the town’s population had grown to 350, and on September 14, 1889, with a population of 400, Leonard was officially incorporated as a town. That same year, City Hall was established in a two-story building on the square, and in 1890, the community newspaper, The Leonard Graphic, began publication—and continues to operate today.
Now a multi-day homecoming of sorts, the Leonard Picnic draws current residents, returning families, and visitors alike. It’s a celebration of where the town has been—and where it’s going.
If you’re looking for food, fun, family, and small-town charm wrapped in history, the road home leads to Leonard.
