Grayson County, Texas -- The next Grayson County Historical Society meeting is called for 6:30 p.m. July 8, 2025, at Frontier Village in Loy Lake Park.

The featured speaker for the evening is our presiding president, Merrill Hazelton. His talk will be about the Parker Family. Quanah Parker was a remarkable person in Comanche history, born to Comanche Chief Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker. His mother was a white woman who had been captured as a child and raised among the Comanche. In 1875 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he surrendered. Later on he was appointed by the federal government to be the principal Chief of the entire Comanche Nation. Later in life he became a wealthy rancher and investor.

We have some towns here in Texas that are named in his honor. Parker passed away in 1911 and is buried at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was the Indian with blue eyes who kept his braids and is known as a Comanche Chief that bridged two worlds. Parker has a great-great grandson by the name of Lance Tahmahkera, born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, who dedicated 45 years to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth Imaging Department.

Merrill and his wife, Juanita, have been active members of the Grayson County Historical Society for many years.

We are looking forward to an evening with friends, new and old. Everyone is welcome.

For the new friends, our location is Loy Lake Park which is located midway between Denison and Sherman off of Hwy 75 South. Exit 67.
