Durant, Oklahoma -- McNair Scholars from Southeastern Oklahoma State University have been research presenters at multiple conferences in recent weeks.
Five McNair Scholars traveled to Baltimore, Md., to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s 33rd Annual National McNair Research Conference, themed Rooted in Resilience: Constructing Livable Worlds in Academy.
Five Southeastern McNair Scholars attended this conference with four presenting 60-minute poster presentations.
Adam Canler, a senior Psychology major from Atoka, presented “Exploring the Relationship of Emotional Intelligence and a Growth Mindset”, Shanna Chill, a senior Community Psychology major from Ardmore, presented “Seeds of Empathy: How Early Life Shapes Concern for Humans and Animals”, Kincade Hise, a junior Biology major from Durant, presented “Detection of Microbial Pathogens in Duckweed Populations”, Karina Trevino, a senior Psychology and Management major from Madill, presented “Language policing, Acculturation, and Emotional Labor: A DEI Perspective on Hispanic/Latinx College Students”, and Magnus Laitinen also attended the conference.
The McNair Scholars Program was also represented at the University of New Mexico’s McNair Scholars Research Conference in Albuquerque, N.M., in early September. Undergraduate research scholars from all majors can participate in this conference, allowing for a broad range of topics.
Canler shared his research in a 10-minute oral presentation, while Tracey Rothbauer also attended the UNM conference.
The McNair Scholars Program at Southeastern is designed to provide 25 underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation students with mentoring from staff and faculty, academic counseling, tutoring, and opportunities to conduct and present research. Through seminars, lectures, and a summer research institute geared to providing information on applying to graduate school, teaching assistantships, and developing a research-based thesis, SE’s McNair Scholars will be prepared to successfully complete graduate school studies. Scholars are encouraged to continue through the attainment of the Ph.D.
