Grayson County, Texas -- The Grayson County Historical Society will have their meeting Tuesday, January 13 at 6:30 p.m. Our president Mike Shaw will be our speaker for the evening.
Mike Shaw grew up in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles in a railroading family hearing stories of railroading from his father, grandfather, uncles and his mother. His mother was one of Fred Harvey's Girls.
Fred Harvey started the Harvey Girls by creating a chain of restaurants in the late 1800's along the Santa Fe Railway. They were young women recruited to work as waitresses in his railroad restaurants.

Harvey chose females because he said the men were unreliable. The young women requirements were to be the age of 18 to 30 years old, of good character, attractive and intelligent, with at least an eighth-grade education. And no gum chewing, no make-up and no jewelry was to be worn!
In the year of 1946 there was a movie about the Harvey Girls produced by MGM, a musical and comedy starring Judy Garland.
Mike Shaw is a retired telecommunications engineer who spent years working in remote and overseas locations where he developed a love for history. When he retired and moved to Texoma with his late wife, Connie, he was able to devote time to his study of history and genealogy, as well as his hobby of treasure and relic hunting. Not only is Mike the president of our society, but also served on the board of the Grayson County Frontier Village, and is the President of the Denison Genealogical Society. He is a life member of the Golden Triangle Explorers Society and former National Secretary of the Clan Shaw Society. He is active in local politics.
The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and the location is Frontier Village at Loy Lake Park located midway between Sherman and Denison off Hwy. 75, Exit 67. Members, friends are always welcome. Any questions you may call me or our president.
