McKinney, Texas -- The City of McKinney has unveiled new renderings of the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) renovation, giving the community a first glimpse of how one of downtown’s most iconic buildings will be refreshed during a nearly year-long improvement project. The building will be closed to the public on Feb. 1 and remain closed while construction is underway.

Located in the former Collin County Courthouse at the heart of Downtown McKinney, MPAC has been a cornerstone for more than two decades. This renovation represents a long-term investment in one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

“This project is about honoring where we have been while preparing MPAC for where we are going,” said Andrew Jones, Director of the Cultural District. “The building helped spark the revitalization of downtown in the early 2000s. This renovation ensures it continues to play that role, while offering a more elevated experience for every guest.”

The renovation will focus on preserving the building’s architectural integrity while addressing critical infrastructure needs and enhancing the overall guest experience. Improvements include major upgrades to HVAC, electrical systems, roofing, drainage, elevators, ADA accessibility, railings, and plaster repair. Restrooms throughout the building will be refreshed to provide a more modern, accessible experience.

The renovation design places the courthouse’s history at the center of the experience. Visitors will see restored 1930s paint palettes inside and out, period-inspired signage, and historical details integrated throughout the building. Original courtroom railings will be brought forward in front of the stage, and the former judge’s bench will be reimagined as a bar feature in the theatre space.

The project also introduces new additions that expand MPAC’s role in the local arts community. The building’s basement will become a public art gallery and studio space for local art organizations, creating new opportunities for exhibitions and education in downtown.

What residents should know

While MPAC will be closed, annual downtown events will continue as scheduled. During construction, public access to the building and restrooms will be restricted, and parking on Tennessee Street will be affected.

City Council approved funding for the renovation in February 2025, and the Texas Historical Commission approved the project in Fall 2025. Construction will begin Feb. 2, with an estimated completion in Fall 2026.
