Bonham, Texas -- Carrol Jackson "Doc" Lackey passed away on January 31, 2026, at the age of 94. He was born “on the banks of Briscoe Creek” near Telephone in Fannin County, Texas on October 23, 1931, to Levi Lackey and Beatrice (Smith) Lackey.

He graduated from Bonham High School, youngest in his class after skipping a couple of grades. He moved to Dallas where he worked for Varel Manufacturing for 18 years and then worked as a trim carpenter until he retired back to the family farm north of Bonham. He coached his sons in soccer for many years, during which the team won four Farmers Branch City Championships.

He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason who was well known for performing Masonic work at numerous lodges spread over a large area of Texas. He was admired by his Lodge Brothers for performing these works from memory without books or notes (some of these could be quite lengthy as his Lodge Brothers know). He was famous for telling and retelling inappropriate bad jokes.

A good story or a pretty girl's smile made his day. He often ended conversations with “Y’all have all the fun you can.” His Philosophy was: “Always give 110%, because 100% isn’t good enough.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Ruby Calhoun and Mary Bell Busby, an infant brother, and a great grandson Freddie Wood.

He is survived by his daughter from his first marriage, Cyndi Moore of Lucas, Texas, a grandson, Byron Wood of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. From his second marriage, he is survived by two sons: Brad Lackey of Farmers Branch, Texas and Greg and wife Angela Lackey of Keller, Texas, twin grandsons Carson and Mason Lackey. His life companion for the last 25 years, Joyce Smith of Telephone. He always said she made him feel like a kid again.

A funeral service to honor Doc’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Willow Wild Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home.
