Angel Fire, NM — Angel Fire Resort proudly announces the return of one of winter’s most legendary and unconventional competitions: the 2026 World Championship Shovel Races, taking place February 27–28, 2026. As the originator of the shovel races, it is fitting that Angel Fire Resort is one of the few places in the world still keeping this sport alive.

Following the successful return of shovel racing last year, momentum is building for an even bigger and more energetic event in 2026. “I think this year’s been a big success,” said event organizer Chris Schell following last year’s event. “We’ve had many people come because they’ve missed it over the last five years. And so, they brought a lot of energy this year. The whole community stepped up. We’ve got so many sponsors, and they provided all our great prizes.”

The 2026 World Championship Shovel Races will feature practice runs on Friday, February 27, followed by racing competition on Saturday, February 28.

This year’s event is supported by a strong lineup of sponsors. Prize money for the event is generated entirely through local donations, underscoring the community-driven spirit of shovel racing.
