The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present the webinar “Early Season Prevention & Management of Aquatic Vegetation” on March 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. (Sam Craft/Texas A&M AgriLife).

The cost is $35, and registration is required at https://tx.ag/EarlySeasonPrevention. Following registration, an email will be sent with instructions to access the webinar. All registrants will receive a link to the recorded webinar, available for one month, even if they cannot attend live.

One general Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit is available for pesticide applicator license holders who attend.

The event’s speaker is Brittany Chesser, AgriLife Extension aquatic vegetation program specialist and lead diagnostic scientist at AgriLife Extension’s Aquatic Diagnostics Laboratory, Bryan-College Station.

“As water temperatures increase in the early spring, seeds in the sediment and other reproductive structures such as turions and tubers start to generate new plants,” Chesser said. “Combined with potential heavy spring rain runoff and new nutrients entering the pond, this is the perfect time of year to start thinking about what preventative and early-season solutions fit your pond goals.”

Vegetation management techniques covered

Chesser will discuss a variety of early-season vegetation prevention and management strategies, such as:

  • Bacterial products.
  • Nutrient binders.
  • Bacterial boosters.
  • Buffer strips.
  • Aeration.
  • Watershed best management practices.
  • Preemptive herbicide use in ponds with historic problems.
