Fannin County, Texas -- A wonderful exhibit of historic and modern marbles is now on display at the Fannin County Museum of History. If you enjoy beautiful and interesting things, this is for you.

Featuring rare wooden marbles, vintage classics, and vibrant modern designs, this exhibit showcases an extensive private collection, on loan from the Fernandes family, of hundreds of marbles from around the world.

Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all played with marbles made of stone. In the mid-19th century new technology allowed affordable glass marbles. They were very popular with children. Today both old and newly
produced marbles are prized as collectible items.

Among the items on display are: Handmade Art-Glass Marbles, Fired Clay Marbles, Onionskins (Swirls at the center of a clear glass core), Agate marbles, Painted marbles, Comic and advertising marbles and Sulphides (clear glass spheres with figures suspended in the middle.

This exhibit will remain at the Museum through April.

Many thanks to the Fernandes family for allowing us to share this collection with visitors to the Museum. And thanks to Mitzi Sherwood of the Honey Grove Library and Learning Center for her collaboration with the exhibit.

The Fannin County Museum of History is located just a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square in Bonham in the old Texas & Pacific train depot, and is open Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 4:00 p.m.
