Houston, Texas -- Louis “Bud” Rice, better know as Papa Bud was born on January 2, 1954, in Ivanhoe, TX to Louis Everett Rice and Sarah Brinlee, and passed surrounded by family in Houston, TX on March 9, 2026.

Bud was the real deal, anyone that knew him in life knew how much he cared for his beloved wife Vickie Rice and her children. He usually worked 6-7 days a week, for the same company, as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic on the east side of Houston for over 40 yrs, until he was forced to retire because of his health. Growing up all the grandkids always thought he was mean and scary because when he backed in the driveway with his big work truck, party/wild time was over and we all had to sit down and shut up.   He enjoyed simple pleasures, which usually meant sitting in his recliner with his best friend Buck who was a 100+ pound Great Dane, and watching the news, or just being the presence of his beloved wife of 30 years, Vickie.

We never knew growing up why he was so “mean.”  I remember being scared to even talk to him until I was 16. I’m so glad I did, because he wasn’t mean at all. He was just tired; he helped raise 10+ grandkids that periodically or full time lived at his house. He just knew how to operate to make sure we weren’t giving grandma a hard time, and how he could wind down without the headache of us sugared up kids.

Everyone that grew up in Cloverleaf knew Grandma Vickie or Papa Louis Rice personally, or from their kids. They knew the house, because they had a fully functional half acre garden, surrounded by razor wire in the heart of the ghetto. I mean full functioning: Tomatoes, Potatoes, Squash, you name it.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Rice of over 30 yrs, beloved dogs Buck and Tigger, granddaughter and light of Bud’s life Chloe Morgan, stepdaughter Davina Morgan, and Quitina Trouten, and parents Louis and Sarah.

He leaves behind stepsons Eric Morgan, Bobby Morgan Senior, Charlie Morgan, stepdaughter, Tomasina Morgan, and Lana Michelle. As well as numerous grand and great grandkids, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

I don’t have many pictures of Papa because quite frankly he was just always at work. We can all dream that we become a fraction of the hard worker he was, but it’s going take some real commitment.

A graveside service was held March 13, 2026.  To share a memory or share an online condolence please visit www.CooperSorrells.com

Rest In Peace, Papa, we’ll take it from here.

Thank You for absolutely everything.  You did one hell of a job. I hope Buck and Tigger greeted you and showed you all the way home where grandma and Chloe were waiting for you! We love you and will miss you forever. Have fun in Glory, I bet it’s amazing, and I’m so glad you’re no longer in pain. - Your grandson Ethan
