McKinney, Texas  – E.S. Doty School has been selected by the Texas Historical Commission for an Undertold Marker, a significant step in preserving and elevating McKinney’s history. The designation ensures the school’s story will be formally recognized with a marker, expected to be installed Spring 2027.

The marker submission is part of the Undertold McKinney Pilot Project, launched in June 2025 to identify and honor historically underrepresented sites in East McKinney’s Legacy Neighborhoods. The project supports goals outlined in the 2023 Historic McKinney Survey.

“The selection of E.S. Doty School is an exciting and meaningful milestone for our community,” said Planning Manager Cassie Bumgarner. “This project helps ensure that McKinney’s history is preserved and shared, honoring places and people whose contributions deserve lasting recognition.”

Undertold McKinney is guided by a volunteer Community Advisory Group that works each year to identify and elevate important local stories. Applications for the 2026–2027 advisory group are open through May 17, with no prior experience required.

This initiative aligns with Historic Preservation Month and reflects the national theme, “All People Are Created Equal,” which emphasizes the importance of preserving places that tell the story of the nation’s diverse and evolving history.

Additional Preservation Month activities include:

  • A Historic Window Workshop on May 2, offering guidance on repairing and preserving original wood windows
  • A Historic Preservation Month proclamation at the May 5 McKinney City Council meeting
  • Ongoing Historic District Tours showcasing the city’s architecture and cultural heritage

Together, these efforts celebrate the places and stories that connect the McKinney community, past, present and future.
