Bonham, Texas -- Jennie Lee Shockley, 86, of Bonham, Texas, passed from this world on April 24, 2026.
Born on August 22, 1939, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Jennie was the daughter of William Elbert and Cordelia Vannoy Grisham Washburn. At a young age, she made a profession of faith in Christ, receiving Him as her Lord and Savior. This decision guided her throughout the entirety of her life.

As a child she dreamed of becoming an educator, inspired by her favorite elementary school teacher. After graduating from Tishomingo High School in 1957, she pursued a degree in Education at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma. She paused her studies after two years to marry and begin a family.

While living in Houston, Jennie was inspired by a Christian speaker to recognize that her interest in teaching was a calling from God. She resumed her coursework, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from East Central in 1967, and a Master of Education from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas in 1977. She taught first grade in Bonham ISD for over 30 years, retiring in 2002. She found great joy in helping children learn, grow in confidence, and believe in themselves.

Jennie was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Bonham. Over the years, she taught children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, played piano, participated in Women’s Missionary Union, served on church committees, and helped with wedding and baby showers.

She deeply loved people and was faithful in praying for and encouraging others. In retirement, she joined a local Moms in Prayer group that met weekly to pray for children, grandchildren, schools and teachers. She will be missed by this group.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, James Glenn Shockley; sister Kathy (Herb) Hudgens; cousin Gary Grisham; children, Myles (Donna) Shockley, and Donna (Tom) Hunnell; grandchildren Harrison Shockley, and Julia Hunnell; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Bonham. The service will be preceded by a visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church.

Jennie requested that her favorite scripture be shared: “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
