The annual contest encourages Texas FFA members to develop a deeper understanding of natural resource conservation while strengthening their public speaking and communication skills. This year's contest theme, "From Roots to Rivers: Growing a Water-Wise World," challenged students to explore the critical connection between soil health, water conservation, and responsible stewardship of Texas' natural resources.
After advancing through local, district, area, and state-level competition, three outstanding students emerged as the top speakers in Texas.
First Place honors were awarded to Leila Dillard of the Wichita Falls FFA Chapter, who received a $4,000 scholarship. Second Place was awarded to Camryn Skaggs of the Rudder FFA Chapter, earning a $3,000 scholarship. Third Place honors went to Milam Henry of the Calallen FFA Chapter, who received a $2,000 scholarship.
"The Soil Stewardship Public Speaking Contest provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills while learning about the importance of conserving our state's natural resources," said Contest Superintendent and TSSWCB Communications & Outreach Coordinator, Molly Christensen. "These students have demonstrated outstanding dedication, knowledge, and passion for stewardship, and we are proud to recognize their accomplishments."
The Soil Stewardship Public Speaking Contest is sponsored annually by TSSWCB, ATSWCD, and Texas FFA Association. Through the contest, students gain valuable experience researching conservation topics, developing persuasive presentations, and communicating solutions to natural resource challenges facing Texas.
