Fannin County, Texas -- Valgene Ray Abbott, known to family and friends as Gene or Papaw, passed away on June 25, 2026, at the age of 84.

Gene was born on January 13, 1942, in Peniel, Texas and lived a life marked by steady work, devotion to family, and a gift for bringing joy to those around him. He spent much of his working life as a carpenter in the mobile home industry. He took pride in honest labor and in doing a job well, and he carried that same dependable spirit into every part of his life.

Above all else, Gene was a hard working family man. He understood the value of perseverance, responsibility, and showing up for the people who mattered most.

Gene was also known for his sense of humor and his love of laughter. He enjoyed making people laugh and had a way of lightening the mood wherever he went. He was always looking for fun and never passed up a chance to enjoy life's simple pleasures.

Graveside service is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2026 at Carson Cemetery.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Evalena and Finis Abbott, brothers, H.M Abbott, Earl Abbott, great-grandson, and Jordan Abbott. He is survived by wife, Valeta Abbott, daughter, Vickie Miller (Craig), son, Kenneth Abbott (Chris), grandchildren, Chad Abbott (Ashley), Todd Hubbard (Alyssa), Matt Abbott (Sophie), Stormy Mason (Michael), Lane Vandeventer (Brittany), 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, brothers, Charles Abbott (Charlene), brother in laws, Charles Large (Glenna), William Large, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
