Frisco, Texas -- Chester "Chet" Ross Chickering, 82, of Frisco, Texas, passed away surrounded by his family on August 24, 2026, at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas. He was born on September 12, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Ross Chickering and Helen Roberts. He grew up in Winterset, Iowa, where he played basketball, football, golf and track. His college days were spent at Iowa State University, where he remained a loyal alumnus; and after graduation and more pilot training, he went on his senior trip to Vietnam.
Chet proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1971, during which time, he served as a pilot of C-130s and rose to the rank of Captain. His military assignments included Vietnam, Sewart Air Force Base in Nashville and Little Rock Air Force Base known as the home of C-130s. His memorable experiences included the honor of flying Vice President Hubert Humphrey in Indonesia and Bali where his plane was designated Air Force II.
Following his military service, Chet enjoyed a successful career as an attorney and real estate investor. His professional journey was marked by numerous accomplishments and lasting friendships.
Chet married the love of his life, Susan Rodenburg Janssen, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on May 13, 1989. In Winterset, they created a loving home and family and practiced law together, cherishing many unforgettable moments throughout the years. In 2014, they moved to Frisco, Texas, to be near their daughters.
An avid golfer, Chet celebrated four holes-in-one during his time on the green. He was also a devoted college football fan, proudly cheering for his teams, the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Chet also enjoyed spending time with friends through the 3-Coin Coffee Club and playing card games including duplicate bridge.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ross Chickering; mother, Helen Roberts; stepfather, Fred Goodwin, and brothers, Gary Chickering and Vince Goodwin.
Chet is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Susan Chickering; daughters, Lori Stewart and husband, Jerry, and Krissy Hraha and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Jonathan, Brianna and husband, Jordan, Savanah and husband, Martin John, Colby, and Alex; great-grandchildren, Penelope and Lillian; sister, Sherry Lathrum and husband, Ed; sisters-in-law, Louise Chickering and Becky Goodwin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Frisco, Texas, on October 10, 2026.
