Ector, Texas -- The Ector Lady Eagles may have lost the battle Tuesday night, but they never stopped fighting.

Ector, a Class 1A program, went toe-to-toe with a talented Detroit squad that entered the match with an impressive 18-1 record and ranked No. 5 in Class 2A. The Lady Eagles refused to back down, pushing Detroit through five hard-fought sets before falling just two points short in the deciding set.

Detroit took the opening set 25-23, but Ector answered immediately with a 25-22 win in the second. Detroit regained the advantage with a 25-17 third-set victory, putting the Lady Eagles’ backs against the wall.

Ector responded with grit.

In a back-and-forth fourth set, the Lady Eagles fought off Detroit and pulled out a thrilling 28-26 victory to force a fifth and deciding set. The battle continued all the way to the final points, with Detroit narrowly escaping with a 15-13 win.

Defense was the heartbeat of the Lady Eagles throughout the five-set battle. Ector finished the night with an incredible 123 team digs, refusing to let the ball hit the floor and repeatedly extending rallies that kept them alive against Detroit’s powerful offense. Without that relentless defensive effort, the Lady Eagles would not have been able to stay in the fight the way they did. Audrey Arie led the defensive charge with an outstanding 48 digs, while Alana Mackey added 19, Ella Laymance recorded 21, and Adalynn Dederick contributed 13.

Final scores: 23-25, 25-22, 17-25, 28-26, 13-15.

The Lady Eagles showed that classifications and rankings don’t determine how hard a team will compete. Against one of the top-ranked teams in Class 2A, Ector proved it could battle point-for-point and refused to quit when the match got tough.
