Fort Worth, Texas -- Mary Ellen Hahn, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 2, 2024 at her home in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Mary was born on March 18, 1927 to Mollie and Emmett Ward in Bonham, Texas where she grew up. She was an only child.

She graduated from Texas State College for Women (TSCW) in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition. She last worked in Houston as a dietician in pediatrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She met her future husband, Walter L. Hahn, in college through mutual friends.  They were married in Houston on February 23, 1951.  They had two sons, Steve and Neal, and a daughter, Carol.

While being a housewife and raising children, Mary had many interests she pursued. She volunteered as a docent at the Kimbell Art Museum for 26 years doing tours for adults and children and doing children’s workshops.  She loved her docent work there. She was a searcher for understanding and knowledge of things in general and things that interested her.  This led her to be a reader.  She and her husband shared common interests such as their condo in Santa Fe, New Mexico, art classes, art galleries and museums, ballet, symphony, traveling vacations with their family including family vacations to Charleston, South Carolina for many summers.

Both she and Walter were active in their church, University Christian Church.  There they taught Sunday school classes for children for a number of years, worked with Chi Rho youth groups and served on many committees.  She also enjoyed participating in Christian Women’s Fellowship at UCC. They enjoyed traveling with the church to the Holy Land and to Turkey and Greece.

Mary and Walter were involved in their children’s countless activities.  She, like Walter, encouraged their children and supported them in their interests and activities throughout their lives. They were always there for them.

Mary was a very supportive, loving, and perceptive person with a quick and fun sense of humor.  She was a wonderful and much loved wife to Walter and a wonderful and much loved mother to Steve, Carol, and Neal.

Mary was the beloved wife for 70 years of the late Walter Hahn, loving mother of Carol Hahn and the late Stephen Hahn and the late Neal Hahn, mother-in-law of Lynn Hahn, grandmother of Allison Hahn (Zac Powell) and Taylor Hahn (Jade Olson), and great grandmother of Nova Hailey Powell.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at University Christian Church.  A private family graveside service at Greenwood Memorial Park will precede the memorial service.
