Dallas, Texas -- Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, Ida y Vuelta Flamenco is causing a frenzy this September and October with a wide array of events – from performances and paella-and-beer gatherings to the launch of the inaugural Texas Flamenco Festival – across Texas, including McKinney, Plano, San Antonio and Dallas. Oak Cliff nonprofit Flamenco Fever is at the helm of the 7th Fall Flamenco Residency which includes dozens of activities in a wide variety of venues. Since 2018, singers, guitarists and dancers have been invited from across the globe for months at a time to fuel the local flamenco flame like never before. Not only will these visiting artists provide top-notch performances, they also will provide local students with the opportunity to study with them during their eight-week residency. The students will not only train in the studio but also perform on stage during select shows around North Texas.
Also, the inaugural Texas Flamenco Festival will feature 10 events in October including three concerts and four workshops with legendary artists christening the newly opened “La Cantera Arts Conservatory,” The brand new brick-and-mortar headquarters for Flamenco Fever has come to fruition with the donation of a 4,600-square-foot storefront that was transformed this summer into a dance studio and event space designed specifically for flamenco and other performing arts.
Local schools, restaurants, festivals and theaters are taking advantage of the opportunity to host these professional-level performers, thanks to grants that assist with the costs of travel and housing expenses.
Up close and personal is the best way to be transformed by the intricacies of flamenco footwork accompanied by live guitar and song. Below is a list of some of the venues where the public can experience these professional artists and students in a unique combination of live music and dance during the Hispanic Heritage Month holiday established in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson.
TRES ARTES "THE PAINTER & THE POET" – SATURDAY, SEPT. 7, AT 7:30 P.M.

Tres Artes "The Painter & the Poet" tells the tragic love story between Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca whose romance was a secret until the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. The untold romance was set to a flamenco soundtrack in 2023 by various artists under the direction of local Director/Producer Julia Alcántara. This special evening combines poetry, history, music and dance into one enthralling performance. "Tres Artes" is an evening of state-of-the-art choreography, elegant costuming and incredible music, delving into the provocative history of Spain, the rise of Surrealism, the LGBTQ community and the Fascist Regime in the early 20th century. FLAMENCO FEVER RESIDENCY CAST BIOS:
Alejandro Navarro, cantaor/guitarist began his studies as a guitarist and singer at the age of fourteen, studying teachers such as Eduardo Rebollar, Pedro Sierra, Paco Cortés, and Antonio Carrión. He has shared the stage with cantors Manuel Cástulo, Antonio Ortega, Paco (el sopi), and teacher Maria Serrano.In 2010 he founded the group, Retales Flamencos.
Jorge Robledo (bailaor - male dancer) as "Federico Garcia Lorca." Mr. Robledo, who resides in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been principal dancer for numerous performances in Spain and around the world.
Luckie “Abejorro.” Over the past 10 years, Mr. Johnson has done everything from cooking paella, running sound, playing cajon, and dancing in the show. Because of his participation in the last eight residencies, he made his debut this year as Dallas’ newest flamenco guitarist
Julia Alcántara has brought the best of flamenco music and dance to North Texas since 1998. She is a native Texan who has performed in more than 90 cities nationally. After decades of giving selflessly to the cultural landscape of her city, attended the 'National Institute of Flamenco’ and was invited to perform in Spain last Summer in the first of its kind invitation.

BAILAOR: EL CARPETA
Young gypsy dancer, Manuel was born in Seville, into one of the families with the greatest Flamenco lineage. He is the grandson of "Farruco", son of "Farruca" and brother of "Farruquito" and "Farru". The stage name was given to him by his grandfather, because from a young age the boy absorbed like a sponge all the art from the family. Keeping it like a treasure in his own folder, surprising you when he reveals what's inside it.
Before he turned 10, he was already on stage with great power. He is spontaneous and sincere, he is happy and heartfelt, he is a “Farruco” and can be seen in the film "Flamenco Flamenco" by acclaimed director Carlos Saura.
He has danced on stages throughout Spain, as well as Manhattan, San Francisco, Washington, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Colombia, Israel and many others.
LA FARRUCA
La Farruca, went on stage for the first time at the age of 13, with Camarón de la Isla himself singing in a performance in Camas; and Sabicas played bulerías for her dance in Los Angeles. After starring in shows such as 'Andalucía flamenca', 'Persecución', 'Pure flamenco', 'Amante' and 'Bodas de gloria', and sharing the stage with figures of the stature of El Güito, Angelita Vargas, Manuela Carrasco and Antonio Canales, and Farruquito's first show, 'Raíces flamencas'. As a producer, Farruca, transported a show to Japan called "De la Raíz, Tronco y Rama" which was a real success. On her return to the stage she did it again, she created another show with José Maya, which was called "Luna & Fuego" it premiered in France and after its success they went on tour. At the last Flamenco Biennial she had the honor of being a guest artist along with her son Farruquito, the show "From my window" was presented. Recently, Farruca was one of the protagonists in the show "Asi Mismo" by Her Son Manuel El Carta, which was presented at the EDP Gran Vía Theater (Madrid).
JUANI DE LA ISLA (JUAN FRANCISCO GONZALEZ CABALLERO)
Isla is a highly respected flamenco guitarist, from the island of San Fernando near the port city of Cádiz in southern Spain. He has toured internationally accompanying some of the finest flamenco artists of this century: singers Jose Mercé, Chato de la Isla, Rancapino, Pansequito; and dancers Javier Barón, Sara Baras and Manuela Carrasco. He has composed music for the flamenco dance company of Cristina Hoyos and for over a decade has been the musical director for the popular flamenco singer “El Barrio.” Juani de la Isla’s recording career includes participation on more than 300 albums with some of Spain’s finest flamenco artists. In 2015, he released his first solo CD “Libertad En Mis Manos.”
MANUEL DE LA CURRA
A native of Jerez but living in Malaga, Manuel comes from a family with a flamenco tradition. A guitarist and singer, he was part of the renowned Antonio Gades Company, he has sung for the dancers like La Lupi, Carrete de Málaga, Rafael Amargo, Karime Amaya, Jose Maya, Juan de Juan, el Yiyo, María Juncal, La Repompilla, Belen Lopez, Alfonso Losa, Pepe Torres, Miguel el Rubio, and with Diego Carrasco's in his band Carrasco Family. He has participated in the prestigious Festival de Jerez Festival, the Malaga Biennial and the Biennial de Sevilla and many festivals around the world. His won many awards for flamenco singing especially for his interpretation of the “Saetas”. He has taught professional level singing and guitar accompaniment at the Jose Espadero Conservatory of Alicante. He also directed the "Málaga a Belen" project since 2013, with the collaboration of many artists from Malaga.
