Sherman, Texas — At noon on Monday, November 11, 2024, Austin College students, faculty, and staff gathered in front of Ida Green Communication Center to honor U.S. military veterans during the College's second annual Veterans Day Roll Call ceremony.

The event began with an opening address by Dr. David Schones, Director of Military and Veteran Services and Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, who welcomed attendees with words of reflection on the significance of Veterans Day. Framed by the flag display, Schones emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces.

The names of 47 veterans with connections to the Austin College community were read aloud by two students— Sgt. Benjamin Meraz ’25 and Sgt. Nick Denbo ’26. As each name was spoken, attendees were reminded of the individual contributions and sacrifices of those remembered.

“We again express our deepest gratitude for our service members and veterans, not only today but every day. We acknowledge how your contributions continue to inspire our students, faculty, and staff here at Austin College. Thank you again for your service,” Schones said in his closing remarks.

The ceremony concluded with a solemn moment of silence, honoring the veterans named and all who have served. This annual event reflects Austin College’s dedication to commemorating the courage and commitment of veterans within the campus community and beyond.
