Sherman, Texas -- Duell Mae (Monroe) Cathey passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024, at her home in Sherman, TX.

Duell was born January 7, 1927, in Leonard, TX, to Milton and Maggie (Wood) Monroe. She moved to Sherman at age 8 and lived there for the remainder of her life. She attended Leonard and Sherman public schools, graduating from Sherman High School in 1944. Duell had several retail jobs, eventually retiring from Kmart.

Duell had wonderful parents, and she always remembered her dad saying, “If you can’t say something good about someone, then don’t say anything at all.”

When she moved to Sherman, Duell first resided just 4 blocks from Key Memorial United Methodist Church, which prompted her dad to have the family attend that church. She joined the church at the age of 14 and remained an active member until it’s closing in 2015. Duell later found a home at Friendship United Methodist Church, where she joined.

On November 3, 1945, she married Raymond D. Cathey of Sherman. They had over 65 wonderful years together, before his death on May 24, 2011.

Duell enjoyed raising their 2 children very much. When the children were in school, she was active in the PTA. She and Raymond always enjoyed going to their children’s school activities. It was during this time that Duell and Raymond began faithfully attending Sherman High School athletic events (football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.), filling the family car with the children and their classmates to attend out-of-town games. The enjoyment of going to the Sherman High games continued for 40 years.

Duell and Raymond also enjoyed going to Austin for 25 years to attend the boys and girls state high school basketball tournaments. Duell’s love of sports also carried over to the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks.

Duell was active in many ways at Key Memorial. She and Raymond participated in Vacation Bible School, and taught Sunday School for ages 5-8. They served on the visitation committee to welcome visitors to the church. Duell also volunteered with other church members to deliver food for the Sherman Snap Center.

She and Raymond enjoyed traveling and were fortunate enough to take a yearly road trip vacation each year for over 25 years, making it to each of the lower 48 states.

Duell is survived by her daughter Jan Cathey of Fort Worth, TX, and son Damon Cathey of Sherman, and a niece Nelda Hickman along with her son Collin, both of Dallas, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her 4 brothers, Irby, Aubrey, Euell and Ray; and her 5 sisters, Artel, Buna, Elma, Pebble and Goldie.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 20, in the Chapel of Waldo Funeral Home.  Rev. Roy Spore of Friendship United Methodist Church officiated.

She was interred in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3385, Sherman, TX 75091.
