Dallas, Texas -- Galleria Dallas recognizes an important holiday tradition with the lighting of a Hanukkah menorah. On Sunday, Dec. 29 at 5 p.m., the shopping center will host a ceremonial lighting of the fifth candle on the menorah, which is located on Level 1 near Zara. One candle on the menorah will be lit every evening of Hanukkah, beginning on Dec. 25. 

At the ceremony, Rabbi Andrew Paley of Temple Shalom will deliver remarks before he lights the menorah. The lighting will be followed by a performance by Kol Shalom, Temple Shalom’s youth choir, under the direction of Mandy Monreal. Sufganiyots – jelly doughnuts – from Jarams will be served while supplies last.

Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt. The lighting of the Menorah is the most important Hanukkah custom.  Jews light Hanukkah candles to remember the miracle of the Maccabees' victory and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days in the holy Temple. It is a mitzvah (commandment from God) that Jews "publicize the miracle" by lighting a Hanukkah Menorah each night during the eight days of Hanukkah.
