Grayson County has 188 Texas Historical Markers and the next one to be unveiled March 29, 2025, will document one of the most difficult chapters in the county's history -- the Sherman riot of 1930 that resulted in the burning of the county courthouse, the death of a Black man named George Hughes who had pleaded guilty to raping a White woman and the subsequent devastation of most of the Black business section in Sherman by a raging, racist mob. As word of the riot spread, lynchings were reported in Honey Grove, Texas, Brazos County and Chickasha, Oklahoma.

1973 – Vietnam War: The last United States combat soldiers leave South Vietnam. The Vietnam War (1 November 1955 – 30 April 1975) was an armed conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia fought between North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam) and their allies. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union and China, while South Vietnam was supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations. The conflict was the second of the Indochina Wars and a major proxy war of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and US. Direct US military involvement greatly escalated from 1965 until its withdrawal in 1973. The fighting spilled over into the Laotian and Cambodian Civil Wars, which ended with all three countries becoming communist in 1975. The war exacted an enormous human cost: estimates of Vietnamese soldiers and civilians killed range from 970,000 to 3 million. Some 275,000–310,000 Cambodians, 20,000–62,000 Laotians, and 58,220 US service members died. Its end would precipitate the Vietnamese boat people and the larger Indochina refugee crisis, which saw millions leave Indochina, of which an estimated 250,000 perished at sea. 20% of South Vietnam's jungle was sprayed with toxic herbicides during the war, which also led to health problems among people who were exposed. The Khmer Rouge carried out the Cambodian genocide, while conflict between them and the unified Vietnam escalated into the Cambodian–Vietnamese War. In response, China invaded Vietnam, with border conflicts lasting until 1991. Within the US, the war gave rise to Vietnam syndrome, a public aversion to American overseas military involvement, which, with the Watergate scandal, contributed to the crisis of confidence that affected America throughout the 1970s.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials have announced upcoming US 75 northbound and southbound mainlane closures, beginning near FM 691 on the south and Crawford St. on the north. The closure is scheduled from 9:00 p.m. on March 26, until 5:00 a.m. on March 27, to facilitate the placing of the bridge deck.

It is important to note that an indictment is a formal charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt and that all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is pleased to announce that they have awarded project grants to support quality-of-life projects that will benefit the community.

A small group of Old West amateur historians are inviting area residents to join them in a gravesite ceremony in honor of Olive Oatman-Fairchild at 5:30 p.m., Friday, March 21 at West Hill Cemetery, 1304 W. Lamar Street in Sherman, Texas. Mrs. Oatman-Fairchild passed away March 21,1903.

On March 19, 2025, Fannin County First Assistant District Attorney, Nathan Young, secured the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison in the Intoxication Manslaughter case of Kyle Scott Wilson, 38, of Trenton. Wilson also received the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison in two cases of Intoxication Assault with Vehicle.

During a regular meeting of Fannin County Commissioners Court on March 18, 2025, Pct. 3 Commissioner Kurt Fogelberg made a motion to appoint Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson to a two-year term as Fannin County Fire Marshal. Pct. 1 Commissioner Troy Waggoner seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Initially, Hudson will enforce the state fire code; he estimated that it will take 30 days to adopt a more stringent county fire code. Established businesses will be compelled to come into compliance.

At a joint meeting, the McKinney Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) approved the issuance of sales tax revenue bonds to fund the construction of eastside infrastructure at McKinney National Airport.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials today announced an update to the speed limit on SH 121 in Fannin County between Bonham and Trenton, to 70 mph. The speed limit update will go into effect once the signs are in place on March 20. The limits of change are from the south city limits of Bonham to the north city limits of Trenton.

Mowing is the single most important aspect of cemetery maintenance and also the most expensive. Costs have increased steadily every year. Donations are our biggest source of revenue. Willow Wild has undergone a remarkable transformation since last fall. Fence lines have been cleared, and trees have been trimmed. Dead trees have been removed. The grounds are cleared and cleaned. In a month or so, it will be beautiful. We need your help to keep it looking the way our community deserves.

With no rain in sight and high winds forecast this week, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham has issued a Disaster Declaration related to the risk of wildfires. Outdoor burning is prohibited throughout Fannin County until midnight Saturday, March 22, 2025. Any violation of this Disaster Declaration is punishable as a Class C misdemeanor by a fine not to exceed $500.00 or as authorized by Government Code §418.173 and if adopted in the county's emergency plan by a fine not to exceed $1,000.00 or confinement in jail for a term not to exceed 180 days, whichever is greater.

The Craft Road bridge in Grayson County at Craft Road crossing Choctaw Creek Tributary is a Camelback pony metal truss bridge built in 1920. The bridge originally carried a railroad, but it was relocated to its current spot in 1950 and widened. The bridge is significant for its engineering history as a local example of a truss bridge. The bridge is in poor condition but with needed repairs and overall painting, the truss could be repurposed as a pedestrian bridge.

Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

John Robert Leake, 43, of Plano, Texas, but who formerly resided in Marina del Rey, was sentenced by United States District Judge John F. Walter, who also ordered him to pay $5,314,059 in restitution.

On Feb. 21, Texas pharmacist Dehshid “David” Nourian, 62, of Plano, was sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison and ordered to pay over $115 million in restitution for his role in a $145 million scheme to defraud the Department of Labor through the submission of fraudulent claims for prescription compound creams.

Recognizing the critical role of early detection in breast cancer treatment, the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center is partnering with Parkland Health to host the Mammograms Save Lives event on Saturday, March 22, from 7:00 a.m. to noon. Fort Inglish Village, Bonham’s open air pioneer village, is now open after its winter’s closing. This wonderful historical park is on Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham between the Sam Rayburn Museum and Library and the Trades Day venue. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Fort Inglish and the support of the City of Bonham, there is no admission charge at the present time, but donations are certainly welcome to finance the operations and upkeep.

You walk into the Credit Union of Texas, Don Toro or Studio 94 on the east side of the Bonham square, into Belle Rae's on the north, into Blessing & Butterflies or The Curiosity Shop on Main south of the Courthouse: do you look down? What do you see when you cross the threshold into these businesses? Do you see Bonham's past?

I was curious about the relationship between Harry S Truman and Sam Rayburn because of a piece of corn. Currently at the Sam Rayburn Museum there is corn on the cob encased in resin on display in the "Gifts of a Nation" display case. No one is completely certain why Rayburn had it, but Truman has the same one. This is what led me to look into the friendship between Rayburn and Truman. Bonham resident Kay Sisk has collected postcards of Bonham for many years, finding them at trade shows and estate sales. Some of the postcards were given away free by local businesses, and some were sold. The Fannin County Museum of History asked Kay to display some of her postcards in the display case on the 2nd floor of the courthouse.

Upper Trinity's contractors are finishing up construction on five new streams near future Lake Ralph Hall, which will flow into the North Sulphur River. The newly connected tributary streams are naturally beginning to flow with rainwater this fall, bringing life back to areas impacted for decades by severe erosion and loss of habitat. Restoring the tributaries of the river to their natural, curved paths helps mitigate the area's severe erosion and provide previously lost habitat.
