Bonham, Texas -- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Joe Berry Millhollon Jr., who departed this world on April 4, 2025, at Texoma Medical Center in Denison. Arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home in Bonham. Born on October 14, 1930, in Brownwood, Texas to Stella and Joe Berry Millhollon Sr. Joe led a life full of love, laughter, and remarkable achievements.

Joe was a cherished husband, father, papa, friend and a pillar of strength within the family and community. Known for his boundless generosity, Joe touched the lives of many, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.

Throughout his life, Joe showed incredible determination and passion in all endeavors. He excelled in his career as a Colonel in the Army National Guard, where he dedicated 35 years of service to this country.  Joe went on to serve and protect the people of Dallas County for 26 years with the Dallas Police Department. He later went to work for the Regional Organized Crime Information Center. Joe was also a 50 year 32nd PM of Ector Masonic Lodge #687. Outside of work, Joe had a profound love for his church family serving as an Elder of the First Christian Church here in Bonham. This brought immense joy and fulfillment to Joe’s life. Service to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ trumped every other achievement Joe had accomplished. In Joe’s spare time he enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks. When his teams were not playing you would find the television on his favorite old westerns.

Joe leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion. He is survived by wife Janice of 24 years, children, JoAnn Morris, Mike Millhollon and wife Vikki, Mark Millhollon and wife Karen, Brenda Markl, Kathy Richardson and husband Dean, Donna Holley and husband Arnold, stepsons, Roy Jones, Loy Jones, sister, Barbara Jean Eilan, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Margerite Millhollon, first wife, Emma Sue Millhollon, great-grandparents, Bart Millhollon, Stella Holder, Willis Holder, step grandparents, Gertrude Millhollon, Charles Wayne Millhollon and stepsons, Chris Jones, and Kirk Jones.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2025, at The First Christian Church in Bonham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Christian Church in honor of Joe.

  • Imagine a simple clay bowl on the table, its surface rough and unpolished. It is empty, its hollow center, a quiet reminder of the pain and silence many carry within. But this bowl, though unfilled, holds potential. Just like the survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, it too has endured the weight of life’s hardships- unseen, unnoticed, perhaps even dismissed. Yet, with time, care, and attention, it can become something more.

  • 1836 – Texas Revolution: The Battle of San Jacinto: Republic of Texas forces under Sam Houston defeat troops under Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, in present-day La Porte and Deer Park, Texas, was the final and decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Samuel Houston, the Texan Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican army in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes. General Santa Anna, the president of Mexico, and General Martín Perfecto de Cos both escaped during the battle. Santa Anna was captured the next day on April 22 and Cos on April 24. After being held for about three weeks as a prisoner of war, Santa Anna signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country. These treaties did not necessarily recognize Texas as a sovereign nation but stipulated that Santa Anna was to lobby for such recognition in Mexico City. Sam Houston became a national celebrity, and the Texans' rallying cries from events of the war, "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad," became etched into Texan history and legend.
